Happy couple strolling through the country

Couples, relationship & marriage counselling

Couples Counselling Canberra

Compassionate, practical support for couples, partners and spouses, face to face in Barton or online across Australia.

Every relationship goes through hard seasons. Whether you are stuck in the same argument on repeat, slowly drifting apart, rebuilding after a breach of trust, or simply wanting to feel close again, couples counselling gives you a calm, neutral space to understand what is happening between you and learn how to change it. At DIPAC we have supported Canberra couples through some of life’s most difficult moments since 2009, and you do not need to wait until things reach crisis point to come in.

The work

How couples counselling helps

Couples counselling helps two people communicate more openly, understand each other’s needs, and work through conflict in a way that brings them closer rather than further apart. Together with your counsellor you’ll look at the patterns that keep tripping you up, like how you argue, how you make up, and what tends to go unsaid, and build practical skills you can keep using long after the sessions end.

You do not both need to feel ready, or even willing, for counselling to make a difference. When one partner begins to change, the dynamic between you shifts too, so attending on your own can be a powerful first step. If your relationship would also benefit from rebuilding physical closeness, we can talk about how our sex therapy support fits alongside this work.

Whatever you call it

Relationship and marriage counselling in Canberra

People come to us by different names for this work. Some are looking for relationship counselling to work through communication or trust before things harden into something bigger. Others want marriage counselling to repair or strengthen a long commitment, sometimes after infidelity, sometimes simply to feel close again. If your partner is not ready to attend, you are welcome to come on your own, and our individual counselling can support you there too. Whether you are dating, living together, engaged or married, and whether you come in together or alone, the work is the same: understanding what is happening between you, and learning how to change it.

In their words

What our clients say

Couples counselling, I would never have considered it in the past, but our friends said you saved their marriage, so we thought we would try. We have learned so much in these last 12 weeks, and we have new skills that are working. We are so happy we met you and so grateful for what you have taught us. Forever thankful our children have happy parents again.

Donna and Brad

I came to you on my own as my marriage had reached an all-time low. Within a very short time you identified that my husband had suffered childhood trauma and was bringing his pain into our relationship. It has been a long journey, but so worth it. Our children are happy, they laugh a lot, and their father laughs with them. You have been our light at the end of a very dark tunnel. You never once gave up on us.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between couples, relationship and marriage counselling?
In practice they overlap a great deal. All three help two people understand each other and work through conflict. “Couples” and “marriage” counselling usually describe romantic partners, married or not, while “relationship” counselling is a slightly broader term that can also include de facto partners, dating couples or other close relationships. At DIPAC the support is tailored to you, whatever you choose to call it.
Do we both need to attend?
No. While many couples attend together, counselling can be just as valuable if you come on your own, particularly if your partner is not ready. A change in one person often shifts the whole dynamic.
How long is a session, and what happens in the first one?
An initial session runs for 45 minutes. It is a relaxed, judgment-free conversation about what has brought you in and what you would like to be different, so we can agree on the best way forward together. Longer 90-minute sessions are also available.
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. We offer secure online couples, relationship and marriage counselling to clients across Australia, with the same experienced support you would receive in person.
Where are you located?
DIPAC is at Level 1, The Realm, National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600, central to Canberra and easily reached from across the region.
How do we get started?
You can book an appointment online any time, or contact us on (02) 6198 3423 or through our contact page and we will help you find a suitable time.
