Family counselling

A stronger bond, as a family

A safe, neutral space for families to understand each other and move forward together, in person in Canberra or online across Australia.

What it is

Support for the whole family

Family is often the cornerstone of our wellbeing, the people we turn to in hard times and celebrate with in good ones. But when family dynamics start to strain, the very people we rely on can become a source of stress. Family counselling gives everyone a chance to be heard in a safe, neutral space, and to work through things together.

It is not just for families in crisis. Even families that are doing well can carry misunderstandings or quiet tensions that, left unchecked, grow into something bigger. Addressing them early keeps the home a healthier, more supportive place for everyone in it.

What it can help with

Challenges families bring to us

Every family is different, and we tailor each session to yours. Some of the things we regularly help with include:

  • Communication that keeps breaking down
  • Blended and step-family adjustment
  • Behavioural issues in children and adults
  • Separation, divorce and co-parenting
  • Grief and the loss of a family member
  • Illness or disability in the family
  • Parenting differences and conflict
  • Navigating a big life change together
What a session looks like

Three steps to better understanding

Here is how a 90-minute family session often runs. Every family is different, so treat this as a guide rather than a fixed script.

1

Assessment and goals

40 min

We start by welcoming everyone and setting a collaborative tone. Each family member has a chance to share their perspective, and I listen for the communication styles, the sticking points, and the real strengths already there.

We leave this stage with clear, shared goals for what the family wants from the work.

2

Working through it

50 min

Together we open up the feelings and misunderstandings underneath the conflict, and I introduce practical tools suited to what is going on, whether that is conflict resolution, active listening, or setting healthier boundaries. Sometimes we practise these in the room.

Everyone gains insight into their part in the dynamic, and starts using new skills in real time.

3

Review and next steps

30 min

We reflect on what came up and what each person is taking away, then agree on specific changes to carry into daily life. I may suggest something to practise before we next meet.

The family leaves with a sense of progress and a clear, forward-looking plan. Many come back for more than one session.

Frequently asked questions

What is family counselling?
Family counselling is a form of therapy that helps family members improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen their relationships. It provides a safe, neutral space where each person can share their perspective and work together toward positive change.
Who can benefit from it?
All kinds of families. Whether you are facing ongoing conflict, a major life change such as separation or loss, parenting challenges, blended-family dynamics, or simply want to deepen your connection, family counselling can help.
How many sessions will we need?
It depends on your family’s needs and goals. Some families see meaningful change in just a few sessions, others benefit from ongoing work. We will talk through a recommended approach with you in the first session.
Does every family member need to attend?
Usually the key members who are part of the issue or central to daily family life take part, but we tailor the structure to your situation. We will work out together who it makes sense to involve.
Is it confidential?
Yes. What is shared stays confidential within the usual professional and legal boundaries, which we will explain before we begin. The only exceptions are where there is a genuine safety concern, such as a risk of harm to someone.
Do you offer online family counselling?
Yes. We offer both in-person and secure online sessions, so your family can attend together in the room or via video, whichever is easier to coordinate.
How do we get started?
Contact us to book an initial session. It is a relaxed chance to talk through what is going on, agree on your goals, and see how counselling can support your family.
