Grieving after losing a loved one is natural. Unfortunately, many people find that they don’t seem to be able to move forward from the negative thoughts and feelings which frequently form part of the grieving process.

It’s not just people that individuals may grieve for: lost relationships, deceased pets, a failed business and even previous ways of life (for example retiring from a much-loved career) can all result in feelings of anger, misery, hopelessness and sadness which may impact negatively on our quality of life. For some people, unresolved grief can become a long-lasting problem that holds them back from achieving their goals and can also negatively affect relationships with their friends and family. In such circumstances grief counselling may really make a difference.

DIPAC offers grief counselling services for the Canberra, Queanbeyan and ACT region from our offices at Level 1-18 The Realm, National Circuit, Barton, ACT, 2600. If you would like to see a grief counsellor in Canberra or just want to talk to someone, we can help. Call today on: 02 6198 3423 or complete our contact form.

Founder and Director of DIPAC Counselling

In 2009, I founded DIPAC Counselling, with a vision to create a service where individuals, couples, families, and organisations could access compassionate, professional, and practical support during some of life's most challenging circumstances.

Grief, Bereavement and Losing a loved one is always difficult

DIPAC can help you work through the grieving process

Certified Grief Counselling Canberra

There are many reasons why grief counselling may be required. Grief can happen for many reasons; because people experience grief in different ways and for different reasons, it may be years after bereavement that individuals decide that counselling is needed in order to achieve some form of resolution. Typically, individuals may seek grief counselling because:

  • The initial feelings relating to bereavement aren’t passing within what they feel to be a reasonable time
  • Relationships, work and/or quality of life are being affected due to grief
  • Individuals are beginning to adopt negative habits (for example drinking more or overeating) in an attempt to deal with the feelings of grief
  • Grief is beginning to impact negatively on mental health: in some cases, grief can gradually change into depression, without individuals being fully aware of the change

What benefits can Our Grief Counselling Canberra Service bring?

Like any other form of counselling, grief counselling is adjusted to meet the goals of the individual concerned. Some people want very specific outcomes; others may be less clear, simply not wanting to feel as they do. Some advantages of grief counselling can be:

  • A safe space in which to talk about their feelings of grief and about the deceased – often people “keep a stiff upper lip” or feel that they shouldn’t talk about the lost loved one in everyday conversation
  • The presence of an empathetic individual who may well be able to offer some additional, useful insight
  • Suggestions and tools to move forward through the grieving process in a time-scale that’s right for the client

Many people are pleasantly surprised by the positive difference which even a few sessions of grief counselling can make to their frame of mind and how they view the world. If you’re currently suffering from feelings of grief or are worried about a loved one’s grieving, why not give us a call today on: 02 6198 3423 or complete our contact form.

Grief Counselling Canberra – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grief Counselling?

Grief counselling is a specialised form of emotional support that helps individuals process the pain, loss, and complex feelings associated with bereavement and significant life changes. It provides a supportive environment to explore emotions, understand grief responses, and learn healthy coping strategies.

Who can benefit from our Grief Counselling service?

Anyone experiencing the effects of loss may benefit from grief counselling. While most commonly associated with the death of a loved one, grief can also arise from other major life transitions such as the end of a relationship, job loss, serious illness, or significant life changes.

What issues can Grief Counselling help with?

Grief counselling can support you through a range of emotional challenges, including:

  • Intense sadness, numbness, or emotional pain
  • Difficulty accepting the loss
  • Feelings of guilt, anger, or anxiety
  • Interruption in daily functioning
  • Loss of meaning or purpose
  • Complicated or prolonged grief

Counselling helps you develop coping strategies, strengthen resilience, and regain emotional balance.

How does the Grief Counselling Canberra service work?

Your grief counselling sessions are facilitated by a qualified and compassionate counsellor who will:

  1. Listen and Validate Your Experience – Creating a safe, non-judgmental space to share your story.
  2. Identify Your Grief Responses – Helping you understand common reactions and personal responses to loss.
  3. Develop Coping Strategies – Supporting you to build skills for managing intense emotions and day-to-day functioning.
  4. Facilitate Meaning and Adjustment – Assisting you in integrating the loss and exploring ways to move forward.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of sessions depends on your individual needs, the nature of your loss, and how you are coping. Some people find relief after a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support. Your counsellor will tailor a plan based on your goals.

Is Grief Counselling only for people who have lost someone to death?

No. While grief counselling is often associated with bereavement after death, it also helps with other types of loss, such as:

  • End of a significant relationship
  • Loss of health or body function
  • Loss of identity (e.g., retirement)
  • Loss of home or lifestyle changes

Any experience that involves a sense of loss can trigger grief.

Will sessions be face-to-face or online?

DIPAC offers both face-to-face and secure online counselling sessions, giving you the flexibility to choose the format that best suits your needs and circumstances.

Is the Grief Counselling Canberra service confidential?

Yes. All sessions are confidential within professional and legal boundaries. Your counsellor will explain confidentiality and its limits before you begin. Confidentiality is only breached when there is a legal requirement or a risk of harm to you or others.

How can grief counselling help me?

Grief counselling helps you:

  • Understand and express your emotions
  • Reduce feelings of isolation
  • Learn healthy coping strategies
  • Rebuild routines and connection over time
  • Find meaning and direction after loss
  • Strengthen resilience and emotional wellbeing

How do I get started?
