“Push Anxiety Away, and It Will Return to Haunt You Year After Year” Breaking Free from Suffering in 2025

push anxiety away and it will return to haunt you year after year breaking free from suffering in 2025 thumb

Note: A group of psychologists conducted a study to explore why humans are the species on Earth most prone to suicide, unlike other animals. Their findings pointed to language as a key factor. Through language, humans are able to conceptualise and articulate their inner thoughts and emotions, including distress and existential despair, leading to a greater awareness of their struggles. This capacity for self-reflection and the ability to communicate complex emotional states might make humans more susceptible to feelings of hopelessness, compared to animals that rely more on instinct and immediate survival needs.

*Change your self- talk and your thoughts you may be well on your way to changing your life…”

When you spend years immersed in the study of Human and Animal psychology together with Pharmacology, it is easy to become consumed by theory and lose sight of its practical applications. My mission as a counselling therapist, coach, and author is to bridge that gap—to help people find more peace and less pain. My aim in this article is to offer insight and strategies to break free from the grip of anxiety, a condition that impacts so many lives in the modern world. If anxiety has you feeling trapped and paralysed, I want you to know there is hope.

The Ripple Effect of Anxiety on Families

When anxiety takes hold, it does not affect just one individual—entire families are drawn into its grasp. I often hear clients say, “My mother was an anxious person” or “Anxiety runs in our family.” While these statements may feel true, they often reflect learned patterns passed down through generations like a rusty nail—useless and harmful. Understanding this helps break the cycle and create a new narrative for yourself and your loved ones.

Note: Anxiety sufferers create a culture of anxiousness. They don’t mean it; it is not their intention, but Anxiety is a very machinist way of “being” and it is hard to shift gears without insight and help.

Breaking the Anxiety Cycle

Anxiety is not just an emotion; it is a self-reinforcing cycle. It creates an “anxiety spiral” where fear fuels negative thoughts, and those thoughts amplify fear. Breaking this loop requires intentional action, but the good news is that simple, powerful exercises can provide immediate relief.

Gentle Self-Talk: A Path to Comfort

Imagine a frightened animal. You would not yell at it to calm down; instead, you would use soothing words and a gentle tone. Anxiety works in much the same way. By practicing gentle self-talk, you can comfort your inner self, perhaps even the “inner child” where your anxiety may have originated. Replace harsh, self-critical thoughts with compassionate and reassuring ones. This approach calms the nervous system and reinforces a sense of safety.

Note: I strongly advocate for “inner child” work in my practice.

Curiosity and Creativity: Unlocking New Perspectives

Modern life often suppresses our innate creativity, leaving us trapped in rigid, problem-focused thinking. Anxiety thrives in this environment. By fostering curiosity and engaging in creative activities, you can shift your perspective and activate the brain’s capacity for innovation and connection. Whether through artistic expression, exploring new ideas, or simply wondering about the world, you create space for joy, peace, and fulfilment. Remember, the line between anxiety and excitement is thin; learning to navigate it can be transformative.

Discovering Your Purpose and Meaning

True healing begins with a compelling reason to change. Ask yourself: Why do I want to overcome anxiety? What do I want my life to stand for? Anxiety can make life feel like an endless cycle of meaninglessness, but reconnecting with your purpose reignites hope and direction. Our awareness of mortality can feel daunting, but it also grants us the opportunity to craft lives full of meaning.

The Biology of Anxiety

Centuries ago, humans lived more harmoniously with nature, farming the land and moving at nature’s pace. Today, we exist in a world of fast-moving machines, polluted environments, artificial lights, and technological overload. Our nervous systems, designed for simpler lives, struggle to keep up, leading to anxiety.

Our competitive culture exacerbates this problem. From early childhood, we are taught binary systems of right versus wrong, pass versus fail. Few are taught the value of perspective or the importance of understanding before being understood. Yet, there is a way out—a path that is entirely within your control.

Rebalancing the Brain

Renowned psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist’s research highlights the importance of balancing the brain’s left and right hemispheres. Anxiety often stems from an overactive left hemisphere—the analytical, problem-solving side. Engaging the right hemisphere—creative, relational, and present-focused—can restore balance and peace.

Practical Steps to Rebalance:

  1. Reconnect with the Present Moment:
  2. Engage the Right Hemisphere:
  3. Foster Connection:
  4. Challenge Rigid Thinking:
  5. Explore the Sacred:

Transforming Anxiety into Positive Energy

Chronic anxiety often stems from an overactive left hemisphere stuck in repetitive thought loops. By practicing self-compassion, engaging in creative activities, and reconnecting with your purpose, you can transform anxiety into a source of positive energy. This is not just about feeling better—it is about living a life filled with peace, joy, and connection.

A Final Thought

As McGilchrist’s research reminds us, the human brain is designed for balance. When we nurture both hemispheres, we create space for healing, creativity, and meaning. You have the power to break free from anxiety and embrace a life of purpose. If you have suffered long enough, take the first step today. Reach out, explore, and reconnect with the peace already within you.
